The Tasmanian Department of Health is acquiring a 20-year leasehold interest, with a 10-year option, from Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd. This enables the Department to construct a new production kitchen facility for its catering services, providing 1600-1800 meals daily to hospitals, relocating from a site impeding airport development.
The Crown in Right of Tasmania acting through the Tasmanian Department of Health ( TDoH ) is proposing to acquire a leasehold interest in land located in the aviation support precinct at Hobart International Airport from Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd (Hobart Airport). The TDoH is part of the state government of Tasmania. TDoH is proposing to use the land to construct a new TDoH production kitchen facility comprising of a commercial kitchen, administrative office space and on-site parking (the Production Kitchen). The Production Kitchen will replace the existing kitchen facility operated by TDoH at the northern end of the airport passenger terminal building. The parties are proposing to relocate the kitchen facility as the location of the existing kitchen is impeding future terminal development. TDoH will continue to provide catering services to Southern Hospitals and a variety of other hospitals, currently serving as the primary supplier of food for the Royal Hobart Hospital. TDoH provides between 1600 to 1800 plated meals a day to various government and privately owned facilities. Hobart International Airport was privatised in 1998 with Hobart International Airport Pty Ltd entering into a 99-year lease with the Commonwealth Government. As of 2019, a consortium consisting of Queensland Investment Corporation and Royal Schiphol Group holds a 70% equity interest in Hobart Airport and Care Super holds the remaining 30%. The parties are proposing to enter into a 20-year lease, with an option to extend for an additional 10 years.
